This week in ISM our proposal for the first major project was due. This project is our original work where we have to create something of our own that is related to our field of study and for my original work, I proposed that I would create a mock NIH (National Institutes of Health) grant proposal that details the steps in the process and logistics behind an experiment about reversing epigenetic silencing to treat diseases. When biomedical researchers are planning on setting up experiments in the real world, collecting sufficient fundings to continue an experiment is vital and in order to receive the necessary funding. A well-planned and detailed grant proposal must be submitted, and doing my original work on a mock grant proposal allows me to get some practice of a real-world job a biomedical researcher has. I realized that to produce a successful original work I should apply the prior knowledge I gained from taking Pre AP and AP biology classes, research assessments such as the assessment on the funding process in biomedical research, and my own research I’ve done on epigenetics outside of school. I found that hopefully, my conclusions from my findings will allow me to improve treatments that can be useful for treating many diseases such as colon, breast, lung, pancreatic, and bladder cancer.
