This week in ISM I had my first major project of this school year due, which was my original work project. For my original work, I created a mock NIH (National Institutes of Health) grant proposal that details the steps in the process and logistics behind an experiment about reversing epigenetic silencing to treat diseases. The disease I specifically targeted to treat was cancer by developing a method to target silenced tumor suppressor genes with epigenetic drugs such as MG98 because I hypothesized that the re-expression of the tumor suppressor gene on cancerous cells’ ability to withstand cytotoxic treatment to allow for a less than the optimal dose of a cytotoxic drug to become an effective cancer killer. In my original work, many hours went into researching, taking notes, and just writing this grant proposal that required a lot of hard work. I am pleased with the result as I was able to develop a hypothesis and include my specific aims, significance, and innovations in my study. Although this was a completely new subject that I wanted to dig deeper into, with assistance from professionals, and articles and videos found online I was able to create an original work project to the best of my abilities that I am proud of.
